The 'SP' stands for Sports Production, and the Mille SP is little more than a race bike for the road. Despite looking almost identical to the RSV Mille, nearly every part is different. The engine has a different bore and stroke, giving a smaller 996cc capacity, to allow higher revs, and there is only one spark plug per cylinder to allow bigger valves. The frame is unique to the SP, with adjustable engine position, steering head angle and swingarm pivot, and 20 per cent stiffer.

The standard version of the Aprilia RSV Mille has been defined "the best two-cylinder bike of all time", "the new point of reference for a market that seemed already destined towards historic monopolies...", a motor-cycle "born to run", able to guarantee a pleasant ride, great performance and safety.
To all those who are never content, to those who thought they had already seen the most, to those in search of a technological motor-cycle, exclusive features and lots of enthusiasm, Aprilia proposes a super-sport version of its highly successful two-cylinder bike, the RSV Mille SP.
Now that it has been definitely decided that Aprilia will be taking part in the World Superbike '99, this motor-cycle derives from experience in that field and has been designed specially for use on the track.
All the special, exclusive characteristics of the RSV Mille are accentuated, further improved and made to perform even better in this dream "single seater". Power, easy handling, precise riding: Aprilia opens a new chapter in the story of high-powered super sports bikes.
THE ENGINE
The engine of the APRILIA RSV Mille SP has been completely re-examined, redesigned and optimised from the point of view of thermodynamics. The result is greater volumetric yield, increased performance and power and torque values that are distinctly superior to those of the already exceptional RSV Mille engine.
A decidedly "full" motor, where the regularity of the torque curve at all speeds becomes a new point of reference for its category. The oil extraction pump has been enlarged and adapted to the greater performances.
The motor itself has been given a new position in the chassis so as to concentrate mass even more around the centre of gravity: this improves riding on the track and in extreme conditions; it makes curves easier and faster to negotiate; the rider can also vary the position of the engine to suit himself.
The torque curve is extremely linear, regular and at values close to the maximum for a wide range of use.
This evolution has been the stupendous result of the experience of a year's inspections and tests on the SP motor by the racing team, of the experience and skill of Aprilia's best technicians and designers, and of years of victories in the world racing competition.
The result of the experience acquired, of research and of the desire to create a product that would become an absolute point of reference, led to the achieving of important values for the RSV Mille SP, such as the maximum power which reaches 150 HP. This power is reached with the motor-cycle in "racing" configuration, using a exhaust system supplied free with the kit included in the price and with a simple setting of the components of the engine/injection/ignition assembly, adjusted to suit the type of circuit the driving characteristics and the preferences of the rider.
The EPROM of the injection system is easy to replace, making it easy to change depending on the exhausts used and the particular settings.
CYCLE PARTS
The rigidity of the chassis of the APRILIA RSV Mille SP has been increased by 20% with respect to the already exceptional record value of the RSV Mille, while the weight has remained the same. This is an important value, fundamental for the easy handling and precise steering which are a new absolute record for mass-produced bikes.
The steering head has bushes at the end to allow head adjustment and variation of the steering angle.
The rear fork has a regulating system which allows variation of the position of the fork axis and adaptation of the rear carriage movement (already a reference point in the standard version), depending on the other possible personal adjustments, affecting both the cycle parts and the general optimisation of the motor-cycle.
The front suspension is by Ohlins Racing, with titanium nitride treatment to increase smooth movement, and is completely adjustable.
Another technological detail is seen in the titanium screws used to tighten the fork plate. The top in terms of exclusive features, technology and efficiency.
The rear shock-absorber is also by Ohlins Racing and is completely adjustable. The rear linkage has been redesigned and the gradual compression curve optimised for use on the track and as a single-seater.
A standard feature is the adjustable steering shock absorber, another component from the prestigious and efficient Ohlins Racing line.
THE EXHAUST
Here we can talk about real virtuosity and care for detail, analysing the exhaust pipe support, made of titanium tubes.
The APRILIA RSV Mille SP is equipped with a kit, included in the price, composed of a racing exhaust for competitive use, with a special EPROM.
As proof of the exceptional yield of the motor, the emissions of the RSV Mille SP, like those of the standard version, fall within the limits imposed by EURO 1 standard without a catalyst.
AERODYNAMICS
In the APRILIA RSV Mille SP there has been a further improvement of the exceptional aerodynamics that achieved record values with the standard version. The smaller front section of the RSV Mille SP (CXS less than 0.3:0.2995), obtained by lowering the bike (by adjusting the setting of the suspensions) confirms the value of the studies and of Aprilia's streamlining ability.
This value is an important achievement for this fantastic motor-cycle, marking up an absolute new record among "mass produced" bikes.
Streamlining means greater engine efficiency, better performance, but also total absence of turbulence, hence safe riding and comfort both on the track and on the road.
COMPONENTS
The fuel tank, exclusive and light, is made entirely of aluminium alloy (series 5000), while maintaining the look and design of the basic version.
Numerous components of the RSV Mille SP have been made of carbon, to give a further guarantee of exclusiveness, technique and light weight: Aprilia has devoted the maximum attention to every tiny detail of this project, such as the ignition switch, which may be easily removed for use on the track.
As guarantee of exclusive attention, for a product that is much desired and sought after, all RSV Mille SP bikes will be produced in a numbered series.
